📜 Freedom Stories Project — Terms & Conditions

Effective Date: 03/05/2025

These Terms and Conditions are primarily for people taking part in the Freedom Stories Project (as in, getting their story published) - however some may also apply to people just reading the Freedom Stories Project's posts.

By taking part in the FSP, you agree to the following:

1. Voluntary Participation

You are choosing to take part in the Freedom Stories Project (FSP) on a voluntary basis. You are under no obligation to answer any question you are uncomfortable with, and you may withdraw from the project at any time before your story is published.

2. Story Ownership & Authorship Rights

The story you share is based on your personal experience, but the final published version will be written by Beth Husband. By taking part, you acknowledge that the content shared on thefreedomedit.com and associated platforms is authored by Beth and reflects her interpretation, structure, and style — even though it is rooted in your real story.

As such, copyright and publication rights remain with Beth Husband and The Freedom Edit. This allows the project to protect its creative integrity while still honouring your voice.

3. Publication Platforms

If selected, your story may be published on thefreedomedit.com, and may also be shared across connected channels such as social media, email newsletters, and other Freedom Edit projects (e.g., podcast or print material in the future).

4. Strict Anonymity Policy

All published stories are fully anonymous by default.

  • No real names, usernames, or contact details will ever be shared.

  • Stories are written and edited in a way that protects your privacy.

  • You are encouraged to speak freely, knowing your identity will never be revealed.

5. Photo Use & Visuals

You may choose to submit optional photos to accompany your story.

  • Photos will only be used with your explicit consent.

  • All faces will be blurred or obscured, and identifying features removed.

  • Photos will never include names, usernames, or anything personally revealing.

  • You are free to opt out of photo use entirely.

6. Interview Format & Selection

In-person interviews are strongly preferred, as they allow for deeper, more meaningful conversations.
Zoom or email interviews are still welcome but may have a lower chance of being selected, as they often limit emotional connection and depth.

7. Right to Decline or Edit

Submitting a form for expression of interest to tell your story, does not guarantee inclusion in the project.
Stories are selected based on tone, depth, alignment with the project's purpose, and current editorial focus.
Edits may be made to improve readability and flow, but the integrity of your experience will always be respected.

8. Emotional Considerations

This project may involve reflecting on personal, emotional, or vulnerable topics. Please only share what you feel comfortable and safe discussing. You are encouraged to look after your well-being throughout the process.

9. Story Removal After Publication

Once your story is published, it becomes part of the Freedom Stories Project archive. You will have a chance to review your story before publication.

If you later experience distress or serious concerns, you may submit a request for removal or redaction by contacting Beth directly at beth@thefreedomedit.com. These requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed, particularly if the content has already been shared publicly (e.g., website, social platforms, newsletters).

By participating, you understand and accept that legal authorship and publication rights belong to Beth Husband and The Freedom Edit, and final decisions around removal rest solely with the project owner.

While we will always try our best to honour removal requests — as we deeply value the mental health and emotional well-being of all participants — due to the structured format of the FSP (e.g. story numbers, cross-platform use, archived content), removal may not always be possible. This is why it’s important to ensure you are fully comfortable with your final version before giving approval.

10. Language Barriers & Translation Tools

If English is not your first language, we still welcome your story greatly! (We want to be as diverse as possible with culture and difference's in experiences - thats what this is all about!). Where needed, we may use translation tools, rewording, or editing to ensure your story is shared clearly and respectfully in English, while preserving your intended meaning.

By participating, you acknowledge that:

  • Language support tools may be used to help communicate your story accurately.

  • You will have the opportunity to review and approve the final version before publication.

  • The Freedom Stories Project is committed to cultural sensitivity and respectful interpretation, but cannot guarantee perfect translation of tone or nuance in all cases.

  • If at any point you feel misunderstood or misrepresented, we encourage open communication so your voice can be honoured properly.

11. Anonymous Profile Summary

At the end of each published story, a short anonymous profile will be included to give readers context about the storyteller while fully protecting your identity. This profile will include:

  • Story Number (e.g. Story #7)

  • Country you are originally from (e.g. Italy) – Required

  • Location where the interview took place (e.g. Online: UK ↔ Italy, or In-person in the UK) – Required

  • A brief quote that captures the essence of your story (chosen by Beth) – Required

  • Your age and gender (optional)

This profile adds richness and grounding to your story without revealing personal details. By participating, you agree to provide accurate information for the required parts of the profile and have the option to skip the age and gender fields if you prefer.

12. Age Requirement

To participate in the Freedom Stories Project, you must be 18 years of age or older at the time of submission.

By taking part in the FSP and agreeing to these terms, you confirm that you meet the minimum age requirement. This policy is in place to ensure all participants are legally able to consent to the use and publication of their stories.
